DESIGN PRESS FIT 2

03 / COMPUTER CONTROLLED CUTTING

_DESIGN-MAKE-DOCUMENT [ PRESS-FIT KIT ]

  • DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS

As part of the assignment is the create a press-fit, I continue to finish my scale prototype of my final project and the solution for this was actually a press-fit joint but in other scale. however the solution of this prototype is not the final. In the design that I start in Rhino, I study the joints and the best way to modulate the material.

Also part of my final project is to design digital fabrication furniture, like the chair, the table and all type of accesories that we can make in the FabLab.

  • LASERCUT

1- HOME WALL

using the 3d model that I create in Rhino and after study the areas that joint for the press-fit union , i pass to create the cutting sheet in a 2d view. the main things here is to modulate the material to use it the more efficienty , depending the work area of the machine. In this case the machine working area was 1200 by 900 mm

DESIGN PRESS FIT

Part of the experimentation was to generate well dimension unions , this  is practically measure the thickness of the mdf and calculate the variation of the material and the lost of material that the laser make.

DESIGN PRESS FIT 2

In the process of cutting the sheet the calibration of many aspects are the way of success. From the cutting sheet that we export fron the Rhino, the format of the archive the the machine read was on .dxf . This archive that we export from te design software to the cnc machine software needs deferents line colors for separate the cutting and the engrave. this parameters we separate since the design process.

Ones that I had the archive open we change the power/speed parameters, depending of the material and the thickness of it that you will use, you have to change this parameters. In this case, with this machine and the thickness of 3mm of MDF I put 60% power and 25 of speed.

The final part was the assembly in where without any glue the prototype works in some point well. And I say in some point, because in the scale of it, was stable, but I have my doubt of the structure in a full scale.

2- CHAIR

As part of the final project, as I say it before, is also design accesories and furnitures with digital fabrication. And for this assignment I also wanted to include a chair. This one I wanted to experiment with other technique of sections.

The origen of this design was the draft of lines that in layers i create a extruction, here I one of the experimental thing was , how thin a can make the legs of the chair, because at some point the structural unions por the piece will work with a rod and a hex nut pressure.

Doing the same process as the home furniture prototype I design it on Rhino from a 2d draw to a 3d model for a overview of how it looks, then I create the cutting sheets to export them to cnc software on .dxf format. After that, this time I use a 6mm pine playwood, I wanted to see the diference between mdf and playwood. and for sure the mdf is in somehow better. The mdf looks harden than the playwood and make me think that it will be faster to cut it, but, the thing here was that the playwood have knots that the laser some time don´t cut, and with this some time you don´t know if you have to repet the cut, which this happen to me.

The final piece was at some point again, a success, but also something that is miss was the joint point that is in the pic. That in this scale look week, but in general I like a lot this design.

  • HOTWIRE

1- PIRAMID WALL – This project that I show here, I made it some time ago, but I wanted to show some experimentation with hot wire cnc. The thing here was how to create a 3d piece with a 2d machine, only twisting the piece 90 degrees. The process for this was simple , including the design, but the final piece was in somehow very cool.

The material that I use here was EPS, the great thing of this material, is that is cheap and you can create big stuff. The project was to create a wall with texture for a video mapping in a gallery. and also another sorprise was the texture the the light make in the EPS, that create a reflection, for the mapping was also a great experience, because they use a static image and create movement with the sound of the event.
